AllMusic Review by

During the 1940s, the big swing bands were often used in Hollywood films for cameo appearances or as props; quite often, the bandleaders appeared in small acting roles. This 1997 Rhino CD has 23 performances originally recorded for films. In a few cases, the music has been greatly expanded with the inclusion of sections not used in the movies. Such orchestras as those led by Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Harry James, Tex Beneke, Artie Shaw, Bob Crosby and Kay Kyser are among those represented, often interacting with showbiz personalities and singers. Although not strictly a jazz set (some of the numbers are closer to pure nostalgia), there are excellent versions of such tunes as "Opus One," "One O'Clock Jump," "Hawaiian Chant," "Star Eyes" and "Trumpet Blues and Cantabile."
