This British import is basically England's answer to THE HI MASTERS. It features a batch of Green hits from his fertile secular period in the '70s. One of the greatest and most original vocalists and composers in R&B, Green forged his own sound, equal parts sensuality and spirituality. That powerful combination is explored with mastery on "Take Me to the River," "L-O-V-E" and others included here. The dreamy ballad side of Green's work is also well represented here by his version of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and the ultimate devotional anthem "Let's Stay Together." Since there's a fair amount of overlap, there's no reason to own both this and THE HI MASTERS, but either one will serve as an excellent introduction into the soulful world of Al Green.
