Originally issued on the Japanese Trio label and since appearing in several guises, this is the second volume of a live performance by Taylor's trio with Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille, recorded in Tokyo in 1973. It's a prime sample of the master pianist with two of his most sympathetic colleagues, a single, extended piece (the latter half of which is heard here) of non-stop, high-energy playing, never lacking in inspiration. The extended duo interplay between Taylor and Cyrille is extraordinary, the former playing his instrument like a drum and the latter wringing melodic patterns out of a supposed percussion setup. Some of Taylor's finest moments occurred in the early '70s on albums like Indent, Silent Tongues, and Spring of Two Blue J's. The concert captured on both volumes of Akisakila fits in comfortably with those events and bears special comparison to the trio portion of the last mentioned. Highly recommended in whatever format the listener can locate.
