Pandit Ram Chatur Mallick is a singer from North India. On this CD he sings two ragas in what is called the dhrupad form, which is descended from the oldest form of classical Indian music. It is quite unusual for Westerners to hear ragas sung instead of being performed on a musical instrument. Normally, the voice sings clear and well formed melodies while in this CD the Pandit develops his improvisation as a musician would do it. It is unusual and disconcerting to hear the voice sung in this way. The voice is used as another musical instrument. It takes a getting use to it, but afterward, we feel the splendor of raga improvisation.
