Ahmad Alaadean is an excellent saxophonist (doubling on tenor and soprano) who is based in Kansas City and has a sound of his own. Heard on this CD in groups with a variety of local players, Alaadean displays versatility during his continually interesting set. Highlights include a delightful version of the old swing tune "Josephine" (performed as a playful soprano-bass duet), an unaccompanied melodic exploration on tenor of "Someone to Watch over Me," the standard blues "Big Six" (which co-stars Reggie Thomas on organ), a tender soprano-piano duet with Thomas on "Requiem for Gerald" and the closing "Big'un" which, with its electric keyboard, funky rhythms and searching tenor, serves as a change-of-pace. The fine rhythm section and the occasional solos of trumpeter Danny Campbell and trombonist Tim Perryman are other reasons to search for this rewarding set from the tiny Kansas label ASR.
