After Dark Review

by Scott Yanow

Clarinetist-saxophonist Artie Barsamian put together a big band in 1979, a fine 17-piece orchestra. Although its playing on this CD is conventional, there are some nice surprises along the way such as a Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker interlude on "No Moon at All," the inclusion of Grant Geissman's "El Cabong Rides Again," some solos from guest trombonist Phil Wilson, and some better-than-expected vocals from Steve Marvin (a middle-of-the-road singer who swings). Barsamian is heard on baritone, alto, and clarinet, and also impressive among the soloists are guitarist John Baboian and fl├╝gelhornist Tony d'Aveni. This is a fine recording by a top-notch local stage band.
