Jon J. Muth and Dave McKean are best known for their graphic art, much of it created for comic books -- McKean in particular is renowned among the most groundbreaking artists of his generation, famed for his covers for the long-running Sandman series as well as writing and drawing his own book, Cages. As composers of ambient electronic music, Muth and McKean are, well, still great visual artists -- seriously, there's nothing specifically wrong with Adrift & Salient, but there's nothing specifically right about it either. While the mastery of texture and atmosphere that characterizes both of their graphic aesthetics is a constant here as well, neither Muth nor McKean boasts an aptitude for music which extends beyond the pedestrian -- especially because it's released via the Allen Spiegel Fine Arts gallery, which exhibits and publishes much of their visual work, the disc seems like nothing less and nothing more than a vanity project. Don't quit your day jobs.
