"Adorn," a heart-stopping ballad written and produced by Miguel alone, is as emotive as it is atmospheric. The song bears some mechanical/organic likeness to Marvin Gaye's 1982 ballad "Sexual Healing," but it trades lust for soul-baring affection and carries some of the era's sweetest backgrounds -- as well as a knockout falsetto howl -- over probing but unobtrusive bass. It was the lone pure R&B song to cross into the Top 20 of the Hot 100 in 2012. Nothing else released during the year sounded anything like it.
