Additions to Further Definitions Review

by Scott Yanow

This LP is a reprise of Benny Carter's brilliant Further Definitions session of 1961 and, like most sequels, it is not quite on the same level as the original. Utilizing five saxes (Bud Shank and his own altos, tenors Buddy Collette and Teddy Edwards and baritonist Bill Hood), Carter's arrangements for six of his originals, "Fantastic, That's You" and "If Dreams Come True" are colorful, although the solos are less memorable than on the earlier session; who could replace Coleman Hawkins? But, evaluated by itself, this date (Carter's only small-group album from 1963-75) has enough enjoyable moments to be recommended.
