This CD was created as a companion to the book Vom Umgang mit dem Zufall and a video installation by Ruth Bamberg. With the help of her husband, Philippe Micol, she interviewed eight improvisers from the experimental German scene, asking them questions about music, improvisation, and culture. She also recorded them solo for 15 minutes each. The book published the interviews; the art installation featured the 15-minute videos running simultaneously and continuously. Achtmal.1: SoloSchichten was pieced together afterwards. It consists of a half-hour collage of the individual performances into a "group" performance similar to what one could have listened to at the art gallery. Alto Gunda Gottschalk, vocalist Danièle Ors-Hagen, accordionist Ute Völker, bassist Jan Keller, saxophonist Stefan Keune, guitarist Erhard Hirt, keyboardist Martin Theurer, and tuba player Melvyn Poore did not play together, but be darned if you can figure that out without the explanations! Micol's "arrangement" makes a lot of sense most of the time, enough to send a reviewer drifting on a thought spiral about what actually makes a good improvisation.
