The re-recordings that plagued Vol. 4 are an even graver problem on The Envelope Please...Academy Award Winning Songs, Vol. 5 (1982-1993), the final volume in Rhino's series of Oscar-winning songs. Original versions of "Up Where We Belong," "I Just Called to Say I Love You," "Say You, Say Me," "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," "Let the River Run," "Under the Sea," and "Beauty and the Beast" are all here, but there are re-recordings of "Flashdance," "Take My Breath Away," "A Whole New World," and "Streets of Philadelphia" that simply aren't as good as the originals and ultimately devalue the work of the collection as either a historical document or a nostalgia piece. That said, there are enough good moments to make the collection worthwhile for dedicated soundtrack and movie music fans -- casual fans should just be aware that the collection isn't all it seems.
