AllMusic Review by

This 40-track collection of soul on two disks will be of little interest to avid music buyers. All of the tracks are available on countless other compilations; there's not an unreleased gem or obscure masterpiece in sight. But this isn't for the collector, or casual, front- running fans, it's for people who buy one or two CDs' every five years or so. The compilers cover the entire gamut of soul music from pop, screaming funk, ballads, dancers, southern, jazz, to blue-eyed soul. The artists include Brook Benton, James Brown, the Drifters, Sam & Dave, Al Jarreau, Ike & Tina Turner, the Ohio Players, and Rose Royce. Mary Wells' "My Guy" is the only Motown selection. Blue-eyed soul is represented by Dr. John, the Box Tops, and the Sir Douglas Quintet. A CD that should be sold in untraditional outlets like chic book stores, art galleries, and boutiques because its appeal is to the untraditional buyer.
