Despite its somewhat puzzling name, Year in Your Life: 1950s, Vol. 1 is a fairly decent collection of hits compiled from all the '50s editions of the Year in Your Life series. It may have only ten tracks, but they're all original recordings and they're all well-known singles, unlike many similar compilations. The album has a nice mix of all-time classics like Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire," Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," and the Everly Brothers' "Wake Up Little Susie," and fun, of-the-moment singles such as Fabian's "Tiger" and Freddy Cannon's "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans." Since the collection is so short, it can't really be considered a representative look at the music of the '50s, but anyone interested in dabbling in that decade's sounds could do worse.
