Tribute to Staind features a no-name cover band's takes on 12 songs from the alt-metal combo's brief catalog. The hits are here, including "It's Been a While" and the gloomy yet somehow uplifting "Outside," and the grinding anthemics of "Open Your Eyes" and "Crawl" are handled effectively. However, this release is really only for the Staind fanatic, as the band's original music isn't memorable enough for a tribute to appeal to the casual listener. Even longtime Staind supporters may have a problem with this tribute, as part of the group's appeal is vocalist Aaron Lewis' anguished, cathartic lyrics. Hearing some other guy sing Lewis' heart out is a little disconcerting, no matter how much it sounds like the real thing.
