AllMusic Review by

Johnny Cash was perhaps the most singular, beloved, and iconic artist that country music ever produced, and his recorded legacy is just that, a body of work that made him a legend and an American treasure. His professional career ran from 1954 to 2003, during which time he recorded nearly 100 albums and released over 150 singles, and became universally imprinted as "The Man in Black." This five-disc set collects five albums Cash recorded for Columbia Records between 1958 and 1960, including The Fabulous Johnny Cash (1958), Hymns by Johnny Cash (1959), Songs of Our Soil (also 1959), Now, There Was a Song! (1960), and Ride This Train (also 1960), along with bonus tracks and a complete second version of Ride This Train with Cash's spoken song introductions removed.
