A Star of Beards Review

by Pat Sullivan

Perhaps taking into consideration the success of Devendra Banhart in the early 2000s--himself a huge fan of the proto-freak folk duo Tyrannosaurus Rex--Get Back released this single disc of rarities and curios from the band. The tracks are outtakes recorded between August 1967 and August 1970, and all of them are available on the hard-to-find six-disc box set A WHOLE ZINC OF FISHES--essentially the complete Tyrannosaurus Rex. Yet the casual fan--or Devendra fan looking for some history--should eat this up, as it’s a great digest of some of the best tracks from the box set that’ll save the listener money and hours. The highlights include both sides of a single released as Dib Cochran & The Earwigs--featuring Bolan, his bandmate Micky Finn, producer Tony Visconti, David Bowie, and Yes’s Rick Wakeman--and the 15-minute workout “June Child Recitation.”
