A Soundtrack for the Wheel of Time Review

by Gary Hill

A Soundtrack for the Wheel of Time is the creation of Robert Berry (Three). It is a soundtrack album created not for a film or television show, but rather to accompany a series of books. The fantasy books are written by Robert Jordan, who has officially endorsed this album. Berry hooked up with several artists to do the album. They include Lief Sorbye (Tempest, Caliban), Andy Frazier, Lisa Bouchelle (Mastermind), and Michael Mullen (formerly of both Tempest and Caliban). Since two of those musicians are from Tempest, a Celtic rock band that Berry has long been associated with, it should come as no surprise that much of the music has a strong Celtic texture. There are certainly other things going on here as well, though. Chief among the sounds that show up are leanings toward the music of such artists as the Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, and Tangerine Dream. The majority of the disc, as one would expect from a soundtrack, is instrumental. The album should succeed at what it is intended to be, a soundtrack to use as music while reading the books.
