AllMusic Review by

While it's true that this anthology of Muddy Waters material is limited to a single disc, for the price and the package it's a tough one to beat. Containing 24 tracks, it basically showcases the great bluesman's seminal early years when his rural Delta-styled blues made the move to the modern, raucous Chicago blues style, and covers the years 1948 to 1953. Both parts of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" are here, as are "Honey Bee," "Rollin' Stone," "Louisiana Blues," "Iodine in My Coffee," "Turn Your Lamp Down Low (Baby Please Don't Go)," "Loving Man," "Blow Wind Blow," and many others. While the set doesn't presume to be comprehensive, it does offer an exciting and thoroughly engaging overview of Waters' most adventurous period.
