AllMusic Review by

Despite its title, none of the 16 studio recordings included on this LP were taken from live appearances at the Savoy and the club's most famous band (Chick Webb's Orchestra) is not represented. What is here are fine records from Cab Calloway (dating from 1935-41), Don Redman (in 1936), Fletcher Henderson (1936-37 plus 1941's "A Pixie from Dixie") and Teddy Wilson's unsuccessful outfit from 1939. All of this music has since been reissued on CD (which lessens this set's value) but the LP does give one some excellent swing performances.
