Ron Eschete is usually heard in a trio or quartet format, making A Closer Look, a set of unaccompanied guitar solos, a rare delight. Eschete is not as innovative within the solo guitar bop style as Joe Pass (there are no cookers à la "Cherokee") or Stanley Jordan, but his chord voicings are attractive, he expertly alternates chords with single-note solos and basslines, and his ballad renditions are heartfelt. This set of standards (which includes a logical four-song "Deep South Medley") is well worth acquiring.
