AllMusic Review by

Even though Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger was German by birth, he spent most of his life in Italy, where he was known as Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger, and his publications appeared in Venice and Rome under the latter name. Kapsberger contributed much to the development of music for lute and theorbo (also called the chitarrone), and his toccatas, passacaglias, galliards, and other pieces modeled after Baroque dance forms influenced later keyboard composers. The difficulty of assessing Kapsberger's reputation comes from squaring his widely acknowledged virtuosity as a performer with his inadequacy as a composer, which perplexed a few of his contemporaries and is generally conceded by modern scholars. Without following the scores, one might be convinced of Kapsberger's cleverness and natural affinity for the instrument's vibrant sonorities, even though he was inconsistent in using his ideas to their fullest, creating the impression that his music was more freely improvisational than he might have intended. Jonas Nordberg displays consummate skill on the theorbo and makes this 2019 BIS album worth hearing on the strength of his seemingly effortless playing. BIS gives this hybrid SACD intimate sound and a noise-free environment, which makes every note audible.
