Despite what the packaging might lead you to believe, '70s R&B Soul Hits does not contain the hits -- Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?," Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me by Now," Tyrone Davis' "Turn Back the Hands of Time," Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," and so forth -- as they were originally released. Instead, you get an assortment of live recordings (which, to be fair, are indicated within the track list) and re-recordings (which are not indicated). The live recordings are either poor or unlistenable, often sounding like audience recordings made by long antiquated tape recorders. In the re-recordings, cheap drum machines take the place of human-played drums, and the keyboards tend to sound chintzy.
