On the first of two Onyx LPs to salute some of the performers who appeared regularly on New York's 52nd Street in the mid-'40s, there are four separate sessions. Clarinetist Tony Scott has quite a lineup for his three songs including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, trombonist Trummy Young, Ben Webster on tenor and (on "All Too Soon") singer Sarah Vaughan. Although bassist Slam Stewart was the nomimal leader on the following trio session, pianist Erroll Garner easily steals the show. The great tenor Don Byas teams up with pianist Johnny Guarnieri, bassist Al Hall and drummer Sid Catlett for four memorable numbers and this album concludes with a Catlett-led septet that also features trumpeter Dick Vance, Tyree Glenn on trombone and vibes and the masterful tenor Coleman Hawkins. Overall the bop-flavored swing music has many classic moments; most of it has not resurfaced on CD yet.
