AllMusic Review by

Although Louis Armstrong later became better known in pop circles as one of the warmest, most endearing vocalists in jazz, it was his uncanny phrasing and glorious tone as a trumpeter which afforded him the chance to sing in the first place. Sadly, it is rare for a collection of his work to include both the trumpeter Louis Armstrong and the vocalist Louis Armstrong, but the Prism label attempts to somewhat rectify this with their two-disc tribute to the man, with the simply titled 49 Original Recordings. Included are some of his best performances with the Hot Fives and the Hot Sevens, as well as some of his solo work, Prism intelligently saddles up disc one, subtitled The Great Satchmo, with recordings such as a smokin' rendition of "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" where Armstrong and his second wife, Lillian Hardin, trade off celebratory musical phrases, while disc two, subtitled The Sunny Side of the Street,, shows a bit more of Armstrong's vocal work and includes "You Won't Be Satisfied (Until You Break My Heart)," a vocal duet with Ella Fitzgerald which predated the series of legendary recordings the two made together. While the mastering quality of 49 Original Recordings isn't the best, it's not terrible, and the material chosen here makes for a wonderful collection for those more interested comparing and contrasting some of the dimensions of Armstrong's illustrious career instead of focusing on a single facet.
