AllMusic Review by

With the flash flood of DJ mix albums hitting record stores in the late '90s for the first time, what was once confined to firsthand experience or shoddy mix tapes suddenly became commodity. But despite the glut of trance and house mix albums on the market, you struggled during the late '90s to find techno mix CDs, particularly those featuring Detroit techno. Thankfully, the early 2000s saw the release of the several mix CDs that focused almost exclusively on Detroit's vibrant, yet for the most part under-celebrated, techno scene -- DJ Rolando's Aztec Mystic Mix, DJ Bone's Subject: Detroit, Vol. 2, and this mix by Lawrence Burden -- providing excellent starting points for anyone interested in the Detroit scene. Just as Rolando spun many records from his affiliated record label, Underground Resistance, Burden emphasizes some of his 430 West label's standout moments. That, of course, means that you hear several Octave One records -- in fact, nine out of the 28 tracks -- including classics like "Empower," "I Believe," and "Blackwater." In addition, there are a few classic Detroit anthems -- DJ Rolando's "Jaguar," Aril Brikha's "On and On," E-Dancer's "Velocity Funk," and Richie Hawtin's "Minus/Orange 1" being the most noteworthy. Yet what's most impressive about this mix is not so much the records as Burden's fast-paced mixing. Since this is techno, the records demand skilled and relentless mixing, and Burden proves himself to be more than capable, moving seamlessly through the 28 tracks with a consistent sense of tempo and rhythm. This emphasis on mixing as well as track selection makes this album stand out among the glut of glossier yet barely mixed mix CDs monopolizing record store bins. So even if Detroit techno doesn't impress all with its sense of underground nobility, it's hard not to be impressed by Burden's skills here.
