This compendium is the 25th release from the small avant-garde Denmark label Ninth World Music, which has produced an impressive array of recordings firmly planted on the cutting edge of musical culture. Each of these 26 tracks was specially recorded for this release, and each one is better than the next. With an emphasis on international artists (many of local origin), these short (generally two minutes each) tracks represent a diverse selection of avant-garde virtuosity, with an emphasis on electronica. Highlights abound, with outstanding contributions from trombonist Johannes Bauer, electronics whiz Pat Thomas, percussionist P.O. Jorgens, and sound manipulator Victor Nubla, among others. Uplifting, life-affirming, and yet radically challenging, there is not a second-rate track on the CD, which is one of the best introductions to the sort of distorted, fun-filled twisted tones that should appeal to warped minds around the globe. Major talents such as extraordinary bassist Joëlle Léandre, saxophonist (here on flute) John Tchicai, violinist Carlos Zingaro, and reed player Pierre Dørge are joined by equally spirited, though obscure names such as Ko DeRegl on obukano and Diane Labrosse on sampler in a series of scintillating, powerful performances. Anyone wondering where the creativity is at the turn of the century need only dip into tracks from this wondrous sampler.
