In an era of American popular music when Latin pop has been assimilated so thoroughly into the mainstream, the Latin Grammy Awards bear as much significance as the old-school Grammys, so a release like this one portends much in the way of pop-cultural significance. 2002 LATIN GRAMMY NOMINEES is, as one might expect, an eclectic mix of Pan-Latin styles incorporating modern pop and Latin tradition to varying degrees. There are venerable, legendary artists like Celia Cruz (leading things off with "La Negra Tiene Tumbao") as well as young sensations like the sensual Paulina Rubio ("Yo Soy No Esa Mujer") and the no-slouch-in-the-sensuality-department-either Shakira ("Suerte"). Brazilian music is represented by the famed singer-songwriter Ivan Lins ("Triste"), and of course, crossover superstars like Marc Anthony ("Selos") are on hand to help insure a huge audience for this richly varied collection.
