This one-disc, British compilation of early Sinatra (1943-46) is excellent. Included are many of the finest songs and performances of that period. The emphasis here (as it should be), is on the dreamy, romantic ballad. And although the packaging isn't particularly attractive, the fidelity is good.
Sinatra's collaborator in those days was arranger/conductor Axel Stordahl. His arrangements (strings, harp, an easy, comforting beat), were consistently good, and provided an excellent springboard for classics like, "I Only Have Eyes For You," "All The Things You Are," "Dream," "Where or When," and the darkly gorgeous "I Fall In Love Too Easily."
Sinatra's voice still had a tender, creamy quality in those days, and his best performances were spellbinding and subtle. An excellent collection.
