Jamaican singer John Holt's greatest success has come with smooth, orchestrated covers of American love songs, and while that reputation make actually do him a disservice, tending to obscure his stellar roots recordings and fine songwriting, it's part and parcel of why he has had such a long career. This set features the string-drenched MOR-ish material produced by Tony Ashfield that Holt is famous for, including his big British hit, a cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night," which sealed the deal. Also worth noting here is a fine version of "Rainy Night in Georgia" and an interesting take on Fred Neil's (by way of Harry Nilsson) "Everybody's Talkin'."
