AllMusic Review by

As the title suggests, Rhino's 20 Centuries of Hits collects some of the most memorable sacred, traditional, and contemporary songs -- from "The First Delphic Hymn to Apollo" to the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie." Atrium Musicae de Madrid performs "Epitaph of Seiklos," "Hymn to the Muse," and other sacred pieces from ancient Greece, and the Monks of Ampleford Abbey sing "Ave Maris Stella," "Hymn to the Virgin Mary," and "Te Deum Laudamus." Alfred Deller & the Deller Consort contribute "Gloria From 'Notre Dame Mass'" and "Greensleeves," while Bing Crosby's "Star Dust" and Paul Robeson's version of "The Old Folks at Home (Swannee River)" bring the listener into more modern times. 20 Centuries of Hits does an admirable job of highlighting two millennia of music history, and is worthwhile for anyone looking for an overview of popular music's evolution.
