As the first wave of rock & roll was breaking all over the world in the '50s, Los Teen Tops were among Mexico's most popular and important rock groups. At a time when the language barrier prevented some major American rockers from getting a foothold in Mexico, Los Teen Tops specialized in recording the biggest hits of the day sung en español, and even though they specialized in covers, the group had a sharp, revved-up sound of their own. Enrique Guzman was a great rock & roll vocalist, wailing powerfully in the classic style while adding a Latin touch of his own to the numbers (any man who can cover Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis and not sound weak in comparison is obviously doing something right), while guitarist Jesus Martinez and pianist Sergio Martell had a strong, natural feel for the material that shines through on their classic recordings, which deliver an energy and swagger that often approaches those of the originals. 20 Autenticos Exitos Originales collects some of Los Teen Tops' best sides from the late '50s and early '60s, capturing the band at their peak; the quality of the audio is very good, the performances are terrific, and whether you were a fan in the day or are just discovering this group, 20 Autenticos Exitos Originales is a splendid reminder of how rock & roll crossed into Mexico and found an audience ready and waiting.
