AllMusic Review by

20 #1 Hits From 20 Years focuses almost exclusively on the Motown of the 1970s -- a period less anthologized than the label's 1960s commerical heyday, it nevertheless gave rise to many of the company's finest moments, among them the creative renaissances of both Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder as well as the introductions of the Jackson 5 and the Commodores. And while such highlights as "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and "What's Going On" are still best represented within context of the brilliant albums which spawned them, the enduring greatness of smashes like "I Want You Back" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" serve as a reminder that Motown's days as the definitive singles label of the pop era were far from over.
