While 1963: 20 Original Chart Hits could never be considered a definitive look at the songs topping the U.K. charts in the year 1963, it does contain a fun and appealing mix of the nascent British Invasion sound and the sounds that were big in the States. On that account there are surf tracks by the Beach Boys ("Surfin' U.S.A.") and Jan & Dean ("Surf City"), girl group numbers from Little Eva ("Let's Turkey Trot") and the Exciters ("Tell Him") and songs from holdover rockers like Del Shannon ("Little Town Flirt") and Fats Domino ("Red Sails in the Sunset"). The home team is represented by some heavy hitters like the Hollies ("Stay") and Gerry & the Pacemakers ("You'll Never Walk Alone") and some who never broke big in the U.S. like Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas ("Bad to Me"), Freddie & the Dreamers ("You Were Made for Me") and the Swinging Blue Jeans (the mighty "Hippy Hippy Shake"). Throw in an old-school crooner (Matt Monro) and the requisite novelty act (Frank Ifield) and you have the Beatle-less sound of 1963.
