AllMusic Review by

African Jazz was not only a terrifically important band, it contained a core of musicians who were to be the cornerstones of African music for the next decade - Rochereau, Nico and Manu Dibango among others. Far from being a "mouldy fig" documentary, this CD is alive with the joyous trumpets, clarinet, guitar and voice that characterized the mixture of folkloric, Cuban, and creole musical styles that Kalle championed. At once hot and sweet under the very Antillean sounding guitar solos of Dr. Nico, this is an exuberant expression of emerging Congolese nationalism.
