This Giants of Jazz Charlie Parker sampler exceeds its own stated timeframe (1945-1953) by one year. It accomplishes this feat by including Bird's gorgeous rendition of "Just One of Those Things," recorded on March 31, 1954. Almost all of the music spread over 25 tracks features a young Miles Davis; Red Rodney shows up twice and Dizzy Gillespie materializes briefly during "Ko-Ko." This anthology provides an inverted overview of Charlie Parker's brief and erratically paced career by lumping together a slightly scrambled selection of his work from the early '50s (tracks one through eleven) and rounding off the album with 14 earlier performances, most of them during 1947 and 1948. Collectively, this takes in some of Bird's best recordings made for the Savoy, Dial and Mercury/Clef/Verve labels. What you get here is classic bop; mostly on Savoy, mostly with Miles.
