AllMusic Review by

The high-flying trumpeter and bandleader is heard here on 22 quality selections. And although it's ill-suited for overview-seeking listeners (the hits "After Hours" and "Tippin' In" aren't here), this collection still delivers with a healthy dose of Hawkins' economical arrangements and dancefloor-friendly swing. Cut for Bluebird during his early 1938-1940 prime, the set includes Hawkins' biggest hit, "Tuxedo Junction," as well as other solid cuts like "Baltimore Bounce" and "Uptown Shuffle." Topped off with some fine playing by tenor saxophonist Julian Dash, trumpeter Wilbur Bascombe, and guitarist Skeeter Best, not to mention the top-notch charts by pianist Avery Parrish and trumpeter Sam Lowe, this disc will do just fine for fans wanting to expand their Hawkins collections.
