AllMusic Review by

The best of Grandpa Jones' King Records sides from the late '40s, including the original hit versions of "Mountain Dew" and "Old Rattler." Among the old-time gems here are Jones' version of the comedy country song "I'm My Own Grandpa" and "Jonah and the Whale." A lot of the material on this generously programmed collection also includes a fair amount of comedy, including "15 Cents Is All I Got," as well as novelty tunes like the rollicking regional anthem "Are You From Dixie?" Among the surprises is the folk-based material, including "Eight More Miles to Louisville" and "Grandpa Boogie," where he slips into a really cool '40s dance groove. The sound is generally okay, though a little bright where it might use more depth, and a few tracks like "East Bound Freight Train" sound as though they're drawn from not quite first-generation sources. There are no notes, alas.
