Many people consider Lawrence Welk, along with Jackie Gleason, to epitomize traditional easy listening, sentimental pop, or "elevator music." But there are at least two members of his outfit with appeal beyond Welk's patented "champagne music" -- guitarist Buddy Merrill and accordionist Myron Floren. Floren made many polka records and a few in the Welk style. But 12 Great Hits is a standout. The tunes are great, sometimes exotic standards, such as "Quiet Village" and "Misirlou." And in stereo with standard percussive accompaniment, Floren really makes them zing. Fans of all instrumental pop as well as accordion will want to seek it out.
