Fujitsu sponsors 100 Gold Fingers, an annual concert tour of Japan featuring ten all-star pianists. This phenomenal concert recorded on June 10, 2001 features most of them as individual performers, while occasionally adding bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Grady Tate. The cast includes Don Friedman, Eric Reed, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, James Williams, Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Junior Mance, Ray Bryant, and Mal Waldron. The music focuses primarily on standards, with a handful of classic jazz compositions, and a couple of originals. In addition to the solos, Reed and Green join forces for a wild romp through "Perdido," while Mance and Bryant share the spotlight as well for a pair of songs. Mal Waldron, in one of his final appearances on CD prior to his death in 2002, delivers a stunning, very dark interpretation of "Darn That Dream." All ten pianists plus the rhythm section participate in the rousing finale of "Take the 'A' Train."
