A perfect song to restart Steve Winwood's career at the dawn of the 1980s, "While You See a Chance" is one of the most positive statements to come out of a very confusing era. Co-written with Texas-born lyricist Will Jennings (who had written several songs for Kool & the Gang), it's a parable of strength of spirit, virtue, and duty. Musically, Winwood encapsulates all of this in a beautiful, syncopated melody with some very drastic chord changes that he somehow makes work. The feeling of survival that engulfs the track is undeniable and gave Winwood and much-needed shot in the arm creatively, as well as a huge international hit. The lead song on Winwood's Arc of a Diver album, it's also on the Winwood box, The Finer Things.
