Despite the fact that this song first brought the A&M group to the public consciousness, 1980’s “When Love Calls” is hardly a debut. The band released Atlantic Starr and seemed to be another undistinguished r&b act even with the hit “Stand Up”. For fans of the genre, 1978 to 1980 was a veritable lifetime and “When Love Calls” proves that Atlantic Starr was more than ready for the future. Despite the top notch playing and producing, the star of this track is Atlantic Starr lead vocalist Sharon Bryant. Vocally she didn’t bear any clear resemblance to what came before and her sharp, arresting tone made more than a few stand up and take notice. On “When Love Calls” she meshes beautifully with the arrangement and accurately sums up the bittersweet emotions that love can often bring. In fact she is so persuasive here that one might be inclined to take the advice she is issuing here. “When Love Calls” fulfilled the promise of the band and is still one of their most loved tracks.
