The Crab-Grass Baby

Composed by Frank Zappa

Song Review by

Not really a song, "The Crab-Grass Baby" is the opening number (mostly dialogue) of Act II of Frank Zappa's 1984 pseudo-musical Thing-Fish. At the end of Act I, Harry-as-a-Boy had fallen in love with Artificial Rhonda. Now they live together in a trailer park (the same happened to Potato-Head Bobby in "San Ber'dino") and just had a boy. The infant already talks, in a 1984 computer voice, his favorite subject being cars. He also throws in bits of the "Valley Girl" monologue. His father seems to be very proud of him. The music in the background provides an early example of Zappa's work with the Synclavier.
