Red Hot Chili Peppers

Suck My Kiss

Composed by Anthony Kiedis / Chad Smith / Flea / John Frusciante

Song Review by

Heavily funky in the way that very few contemporary rock bands ever managed to be, and packed with sidestepping rap flourishes and brash guitar slashes and even a hint of bluesy riffing, 1992’s ”Suck My Kiss” completely flew in the face of the established pecking order of alternative rock. Stripping back the presuppositions of critics and fans alike, the Red Hot Chili Peppers fully allied themselves with the very few genre-bending bands that were able to make a radical impact on the sonic landscape that was dominated, it seemed, from every angle by grunge. With a heavy beat that was classy rather than hairy and a driving bass that only echoed the blatantly explicit lyrics of ”Suck My Kiss”, the music itself added another layer to the already deep innuendo. The rambunctious jam proudly joined album mates ”Sir Psycho Sexy” and ”Funky Monks” in keeping the Peppers’ long-standing tradition of subtly plied profanity alive, and was well-deserving of the Parental Advisory sticker that the Peppers’ wore as a badge of honor.
