Stevie Nicks

Stop Draggin' My Heart Around

Composed by Mike Campbell / Tom Petty

Song Review by

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were working at such an artistic level of white heat at the dawn of the 1980s that they could actually afford to write and record hits for other artists, and this recording with Stevie Nicks is quite interesting in that context. A dark, sinister melody imbibed with moody emotion fills the song from start to finish, and makes it somewhat different from the band's other work, yet at the same time familiar. A great kiss-off song about a breakup, the deadly emotion contained in the lyrics is quite effective. Contrary to rumor, Nicks had nothing to do with the song's arrangement or writing, and it indeed remains the finest hour of her exceedingly checkered and overrated solo career; it also remains one of the finer singles of the era.
