Jeff Lorber was free flowing with his praise of fellow keyboardist David Frank of the System for his influence of synths in pop music in general and the development of the synth bass sound in particular. Lorber, Frank, and System co-founder Mic Murphy were teamed on Lorber's 1985 Arista album Step By Step, which yielded the hit single "Step By Step." The track is anchored by the propulsive bass sound found on the System's "You Are in My System" but combined with a smooth jazz veneer. With lead vocals by Audrey Wheeler, "Step By Step" went to number 31 R&B while glancing the pop charts in the early part of 1985. Another System-produced favorite from the album was "Best Part of the Night" with lead vocals by Gavin Christopher and the skittering techno precursor "On the Wild Side."
