The Beach Boys

Spirit of America

Composed by Brian Wilson / R. Christian

Song Review by

Another fine example of the Brian Wilson/Roger Christian songwriting team's car songs, "Spirit of America" was inspired by race driver Craig Breedlove's land speed record, set in 1963. Musically, it's a fabulous piece of doo wop, which was obviously one of Brian Wilson's greatest loves. Although it only peaked at number four in late 1963, it's still a somewhat obscure song in the Beach Boys' canon -- something that doesn't diminish the quality of the song, despite its somewhat dated subject matter.
