It's typical of Randy Newman that his first solo hit was slightly shrouded in media backlash. It was minor, of course; a lot of "small"-minded people felt that the subject matter -- which basically discredits people who are "short" -- was taken to be somewhat inflammatory. This type of tongue-in-cheek humor was always typical of Newman's work. Unfortunately, the pop music-buying public really didn't know that much about Newman's earlier work -- hence the minor controversy. In essence, it's a well-crafted pop song with fairly strong Beach Boys/Southern California pop music overtones. The nasty little verses melt gracefully with the ultra-sweet (and almost apologetic) bridge and chorus. It's a minor pop masterpiece -- certainly not his greatest song -- but one of his best records.
