Atlantic Starr scored bigger successes with Barbara Weathers leading on "Secret Lovers" and "Always," but the original lineup with Sharon Bryant is the one that will last forever in soul lovers' hearts, mainly due to this great ballad composed by Southern soul legend Sam Dees with help from Ron "Have Mercy" Kersey. "Send for Me" marries deep soul with smooth Southern and uptown sophistication. David Lewis delivers a smoldering lead with his brother Wayne chiming chilling fills in the background. Lines like "put a message in a bottle baby," with backing voices droning "send for me," made this one a soul special, one you repeated over and over, and a song that still stops you in your tracks whenever it airs on urban radio. Amazingly, the 1980 release was the flip side of "When Love Calls," which is a good record -- but if A&M had put the money behind "Send for Me," they would have gotten more bang for their bucks.
