They Might Be Giants

Particle Man

Composed by John Flansburgh / John Linnell

Song Review by

"Particle Man" is one of They Might Be Giants' most popular songs, especially with the under-12 set. Besides its status as a regular favorite on the Dr. Demento Show, it was animated for an episode of the Warner Brothers cartoon Tiny Toon Adventures in 1991, and the 1997 compilation Then: The Earlier Years features a tape of an entire third-grade class singing the song in tone-deaf unison. It's not one of the group's most enduring efforts, however; it's a cute and catchy tune with some funny wordplay in the lyrics, a comically rubbery "bomp-bomp-bomp" bass line and a nice accordion solo by John Linnell, but it's one of those songs whose fame outweighs its musical merits.
