“Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh),” is a brilliant summer single combining the charm and charisma of singer Lumidee with producer DJ Tedsmooth’s reggae injected R&B. DJ Tedsmooth had been combining Latin pop, hip-hop, and reggae in his DJ Sets and remixing artists such as The Sicilians before working with Lumidee. The single combined Lumidee’s off-key vocals with the dancehall reggae rhythm “Diwali” written by Steven “Lenky” Marsden for the Greensleeves label. Wayne Wonder had recently used the rhythm for his hit “No Letting Go,”. Diwali is one of the least dancehall-sounding rhythms available for use sounding more like jump ropes swinging during the double-dutch days. In its original mix “Never Leave You,” became the number one request on many New York City radio stations, rushing Universal to sign Lumidee and DJ Tedsmooth. A new mix was created with guest rappers Busta Rhymes and Fabolous and a video soon followed. Lumidee was quick to point out that her vocals sounded off key because DJ Tedsmooth had her cut the song to a different backing track than the final release. Regardless, her four-note hook and simple lyrics had instant mass appeal. Listeners who would like explore the Diwali phenomenon should check out the Greensleeves’ rhythm record simply titled Diwali.
